Interview: Superstar soprano, winner of the Birgit Nilsson Prize, says an early competition she lost proved to be an unexpected gift. By Dennis Polkow
By this point in soprano Nina Stemme’s operatic journey, the high-intensity role of Richard Strauss’ “Elektra” has emerged as a signature piece. Indeed, the Swedish singer and reigning Wagnerian soprano, who currently performs the distraught and vengeful Elektra in her debut with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, all but owns the part. She is the foremost Elektra in the world today, and she embraces the staggeringly difficult role as “the greatest joy” to sing.

Prophecy fulfilled: WNO announces Zambello extension, Rogister appointment

Francesca Zambello will remain artistic director of the Washington National Opera. On Friday, the company made a long-expected announcement that the director’s contract has been renewed, for three more years, through the 2020-2021 season.

The company will have a new musical leader, as well: Evan Rogister will take over as principal conductor for a four-year term, through 2021-2022. Rogister, notably, will not have the official title of music director, although WNO’s statement said he will hold “the same responsibilities as a music director.” He will report to Tim O’Leary, WNO’s general director.

”I would have hated to be mediocre”: Nina Stemme on winning the Birgit Nilsson Prize

Hugo Shirley, 25 Mai 2018
The criteria for the Birgit Nilsson Prizeare nothing if not stringent. The winner, the guidelines stipulate, has to be an artist with a decades-long position at the very top of their profession, as well as an unimpeachable reputation for reliability and putting the composer first. Anyone compiling their own mental shortlist of possible candidates will likely have come up with a list that was, if not short, then hardly long.
